The Meaning of the Natural Law in the Contemporary World According to J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI
J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI indicates the meaning of the natural law as the basis of justice-sensitive politics. That law protects us against the lawlessness of the rulers, the injustice of the majority, the totalitarianism of the state. The respect for the natural law is a necessary condition of peace. The conviction about the existence of the law which could be recognized by all the people enables authentic dialogue of persons from various cultures and religions. In the face of contemporary globalization and migration movements, that dialogue becomes particularly important.
The natural law makes it possible to recognize and to defend human rights and to acknowledge human dignity. It is particularly important today, in view of the so-called dictatorship of relativism. Regaining the awareness of the moral nature of existence is vitally important for the survival of the humanity. The concept of the natural law constitutes one of the greatest achievements of the European culture and determines its greatness.

Principi fondam entali del cristianesimo in Joseph Ra tzinger - Benedetto XVI. Sommario

Structure of the theological cognition act according to J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI. Summary
The article raises a question of the process of origins underlying theological contents, that is, in other words, the individual stages of the theological cognition act. The basis of theology is philosophy, understood as a set of existential questions concerning happiness and immortality. God “touches” human hearts with His Grace, answering those questions, and this Grace is taken in faith. Whereas, theology is a “heart-seeking thought”, the heart having been moved by Divine revelation and faith itself. While developing throughout the space of thinking, theology looks for rational arguments for God’s answers given to existential questions. This is how theology gets to know reality and its epistemological acts are based on a source of the rationality of faith.

The Co-suffering God as con-solatio. On the Trail of J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI. Summary
Similarly as all theological questions, an inquiry about God’s suffering constitutes a deeply existential question, relating to humans and touching their most sensitive aspects of life and faith. While searching for the truth, individually marked intuitions themselves are not sufficient. That is why theology constantly faces this questions in the light of the H oly Bible, Tradition, historical achievements of theologians and mystics, trying to open a way to cognition and understanding through accurate notions. The issue is visible in J. Ratzinger’s works / teachings of Benedict XVI. The Pope has been developing his theological reflection concerning God’s suffering, reaching back to anthropomorphisms from Old Testament, the consequences of Incarnation from New Testament, showing the core of confrontation between young Jewish Christianity and Hellenistic mentality and stoic philosophy. He then takes out the most significant answers from the treasure trove of Tradition to open modern perspectives, on the basis of such synthesis, answering questions of the contemporary world. The most characteristic feature of Pope’s deliberations links the category of God’s co-suffering developed by theology with the category of Divine con-solatio. He convinces that acceptance of someone’s pain involves the very essence of true consolation. As a result, the Christ’s cross – the most generous gesture of God’s co-suffering Love – is of a really consolationary nature. As such, it remains the only hope for those suffering.

Image of God in theology of J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI. Summary
According to Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, the question concerning image of God is both hermeneutic and substantive one: a question about God Himself and the way we can get to know Him, express Him and convey. Thus, it constitutes an initial question of theology. Our current Pope calls for an adequately great image of God (free of any reductionisms) and christocentrically strengthened (Christ is the first and only faithful image of God and His similarity to God - kenosis and cross – is God’s similarity to a man). Paradox, as a verbal tool used to describe the very nature of God, corresponds to the paradoxical character of revelation itself. By revealing Himself, God transcends limitations of human logic and unites in Himself all that was separated by a sin. Maintaining this notion in theology also determines an ethical way of a man, who was created as God’s likeness and it reveals the whole truth about him.

The Quiet Obviousness of God. The Rationality of the Universe from Joseph Ratzinger’s/Benedict XVI’s Theological Perspective
J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI treats the words from the Prologue of the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word (Logos)” as the fundamental principle of the entire reality, one that determines the essential, ontic rationality/meaningfulness of the universe because it points to its beginning – the Creator. Meaning is not a result but the principle of existence or action – by virtue of creation itself, and Christology makes us aware that meaning is, in essence, identical with love and, consequently, accessible in history and cognizable to man (incarnated). Maintaining this “logic of the Logos” protects Christian faith from mythicality, violence, autosoterism, and moralism. Only humble acceptance of the gift and kenotic unification with Christ – the eternal Logos – in prayer allows man to recognize the true meaning of the world: God’s quiet obviousness.

Truth and Freedom in Modern Theological Hermeneutics. Arguments of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI
Having been distorted since modern times, the notions of truth and freedom have been radically juxtaposed in post-modern world views, consequently resulting in losing the very values: the truth is questioned, while freedom is deter-mined and limited by worldly purposes. Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI shows that the terms are, de facto, theologically important (theological hermeneutics), i.e. they may be fully and properly understood from the heart of Christian faith. God is the right guarantor of the truth (involving the existence of the objective and judicious reality) and the embodiment of god’s son, logos, is the ultimate argument for its attainability and cognizability. When Jesus confessed: ‘I am the truth’ (John, 14.6), he convinces that the truth is universal and belongs to god. Thereby, it remains universally binding – it is the appropriate basis of ethos. The truth constitutes the key to interpret reality and a superior (independent) criterion for its arrangement (also in the social and political sense). Thus, the task of Christianity and theology is to restore the proper, Christological understanding of truth and freedom for the world, as well as their inseparable, redemptive relationship: ‘the truth will set you free’ (John, 8.32).

In breath proximity. Key Theses of Pneumatology by Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI
J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI proposes pneumatology derived from the trinitarian dogma, strictly related to Christology, translated into anthropology, ecclesiology and pastorality (spirituality). All theological sub-disciplines remain orthodox only when strictly interrelated and then they lead to the truth, however, pneumatology is “binding” all the more so because it refers to the Holy Spirit, Who is in essence a communion, a unity. The inter-trinitarian “position” of the Holy Spirit explains the structure of the whole reality (including human and personal one, providing for faith): what is spiritual bonds existence together, unifying it, neither dualising nor dividing it. It does not unite through contradicting identity (of earthly, bodily, historical specificity), as some heresies or ideologies want to, but through establishing ties (communion). As the Holy Spirit always acts in communion with the Incarnated Word, similarly Christian spirituality remains embodied in the historical form of the Church, while charisma is provided inside institutional structures. Closeness to Christ, humility towards humble God constitute a source of real spirituality.

Canonical Exegesis and the Analogy of Faith According to Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI)
The Second Vatican Council in the Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum provided exegetic guidelines on the interpretation of the Scripture. Post-council exegesis focused mainly on the historical-critical method which analyses the human dimension of the Holy Scripture. Therefore, Benedict XVI reminded of the necessity of using theological principles in the exegesis and showed their indepth theological basis. The hermeneutics of faith postulated by the pope includes three criteria that allow to grasp the divine dimension of the Bible; two of them were discussed in this article. “Canonical exegesis” takes into consideration the unity of the Holy Scripture, while the “analogy of faith” enables the believing exegete to interpret properly the text written by the believing author. The article also deals with Joseph Ratzinger’s (Benedict XVI’s) comprehension of the Revelation, as well as the differences between the Revelation and the Holy Scripture. It is hermeneutics of faith that enables one to rise above the “letter” and reach the “spirit” of the inspired texts
