SUMMARY: Christ’s Redemptive Sacrifice in New Catechetical Programmes and Handbooks for Catechesis
How to talk about Christ’s redemptive sacrifice in a catechesis? How should one present the meaning and beauty of Eucharist that embodies this sacrifice so that pupils would gladly participate in it and live it every day? These are difficult questions for which it is impossible to give an answer satisfactory for everybody. Certain hints from the side of theologians dealing with an Eucharist-related catechesis can be found in new catechetical programmes and handbooks for catechesis. In the first place the author of the article justifies the need of creating new catechetical programmes and handbooks for catechesis. Further on the author presents the issue of Christ’s redemptive sacrifice in a catechetical programme for a primary school in a chosen handbooks series. On the basis of the above analysis the author tries to describe the surveyed topic in a systematic way.

SUMMARY: Towards the Metaphor. Gloss to the Dispute about the Cognitive Status of the Soteriological Language of the Sacrifice
Presenting the death of Christ as salvific sacrifice has solid scriptural basis and belongs to the established doctrine of the Catholic theology. At the same time it is difficult to treat them nowadays as coherent explanation of the “logic of redemption”. The article asks a question about the cognitive status of the language of sacrifice in soteriology. The analysis is preceded by brief attempt to systematize of the dispersed opinions about this problem. The very analysis focuses on the idea that it is impossible to restrict the logic of salvific sacrifice to the scope of the theory that would correspond to the faith experience. The answer to the question draws to the emphasis of the metaphorical character of this theological language and the determination of its cognitive status.

SUMMARY: The Theology of the Christ’s Saving Sacrifice – the Trinitarian Dimension
Well-known distortions of the Christian soteriology focused on the Passion and Death of Christ arose due to making the contrast between the Father and the Son in the event of the Cross and the oblivion of the Holy Spirit. The article presents a thesis that the appropriate understanding of the Christ’s death on the cross as the saving sacrifice entails recognition of the saving commitment of God in God’s Trinitarian mystery. Consequently, from this perspective there is a necessity to examine a number of issues: the highpoint of God’s self-giving in the Crucified Christ, the suffering of God, saving activity of the Holy Spirit in the universal spatial and temporal dimension.

SUMMARY: The Problem of the Christ’s Salvific Sacrifice in the Homilies for Good Friday Featured in the Preacher’s Library and Contemporary Ambo in the Period 2000–2010
The analysed homilies for Good Friday present typical arrangement of the content: meditation on the articles of faith and the consequent moral part. The authors of homilies focus on the event on the Cross and they do not search for auxiliary images. It turns out that in the aspect of the doctrine explanation the preachers restrict themselves in principle to general formulations. They do not raise precisely the problem of the nature of salvation through the Cross.

SUMMARY: The Sacrifice of Jesus in the New Testament: Literality, Metaphor, Reality?
The letters of Paul show some serious problems, in the first Christian communities, concerning the recognition of Jesus’ death as the salvific event announced in the Old Testament. The Letter to the Hebrews, offering among the writings of the New Testament the most developed doctrine on its cultic meaning, links it to His role of High Priest of the New Covenant. Therefore a critical analysis of the teaching, not only of this letter, requires the Christological hermeneutics: all statements on His death, expressed in the cultic categories, have the meaning of a real sacrifice fulfilling what the ancient cult announced.

SUMMARY: A Way Towards Reconciliation. St. Thomas Aquinas about Christ’s Sacrifice
The article analyses Thomas Aquinas’s interpretation of the sacrifice presented in the question 48 of the Tertia Pars. The conception contained in the last part of Summa Theologiae is situated both in the context of Aquinas’s thinking about salvation and development of his interpretation in the whole work. It turns out that Aquinas refers to the term of sacrifice in the systematic study concerning the Passion of Christ only in Summa Theologiae, probably under the influence of the close reading of the Epistle to the Hebrews. But when one carefully analyses Aquinas’s soteriology, one can find in it from the beginning the ‘anonymous’ – not referring to the right term - theology of the existential sacrifice.

SUMMARY: Sacrifice as an Act of the Virtue of Religion According to St. Thomas Aquinas
The article presents, on the basis of the source texts, how Thomas Aquinas understood the sacrifice as an act of the virtue of religion. Thomas Aquinas’s speculative explanations concerning the sacrifice and its meaning in maintaining real relationship with God shed significant light not only on the comprehension of the human obligations in the face of God. They also introduce how Thomas Aquinas comprehended Old Testament sacrifices and first of all the Passion of Christ as saving sacrifice offered as substitution for us. They also help to alleviate the tension between the categories of the sacrifice and penal substitutionary atonement.

SUMMARY: Immutability of God and Christ’s Sacrifice
The article contrasts - from the perspective of the doctrine of Thomas Aquinas - the doctrine of the immutability of God with the theology of the saving sacrifice of Christ. It turns out that these two areas of reflection not only do not stand in contradiction to each other, but by their encounter we can more profound understand the doctrine about the saving sacrifice. The basis for this fruitful encounter is the right perspective to the thesis of the immutability of God. Only in this light the misunderstanding connected with the image of God who is personally hurt by sin is moved aside. The doctrine about the Christ’s sacrifice as an act of God’s love renewing the creation can be expressed in a more profound way.

SUMMARY: Saviour in the Poteiron as an Image of Eucharist Sacrifice in the Icon Painting
The Eucharistic theme is very popular in icon painting. It also appears in icons depicting Jesus Christ in a vessel called poteiron. The vessel is kept in the hands of St. John the Baptist in such icons as: Angel of the Desert and Deesis. He points his right hand at the Child Jesus as the Lamb of God. In the Amnos icons near the Savior lying on the discos there are the angels with the liturgical fans, called rypidon. Jesus Christ in the Eucharist chalice is also present in the Marian icons entitled: Inexhaustible Cup or Virgin Mary of Nice. In the cup Savior-Emmanuel is present as the Great High Priest. The Redeemer is present also in the sense of the Eucharist in the form of the prosfora in the discos during the liturgy. The icons mentioned above are very popular in the Orthodox tradition as well as for instance the icon Crucifixion, Last Supper and Communion of the Apostles, which are also meaningful in terms of the Eucharist theme.

SUMMARY: Anthropological Consequences of a Sacrificial Existence of the Redemptor in the Theology of Romano Guardini
The article presents a soteriological thought of Romano Guardini - a theologian from Munich with an Italian descent - in a dimension of the anthropological consequences. By a sacrificial nature of the existence of Jesus Christ, Guardini means His life in whole, not only a fragment or an isolated event, through which He repairs human nature. This is a sacrifice of love, which is perceived by the Theologian as a radical and convincing sympathizing of God with the man, till the argumentation of the cross, which becomes a climax of the sacrificial existence of the Redemptor and a centre of the Divine salvation plan. The Cross is the consequence of the whole life of the Saviour who remains obedient to the will of the Father. It is not an accidental historical event, but a fruit of the God’s decision. It is a mature and an absolute obedience of love, which simultaneously calls the man onto a path of the obedience in love.

SUMMARY: Origen’s Commentary on the Words “This is the Lamb of God Who Takes Away the Sin of the World”
Commenting the words of St. John the Baptist: ‘This is the Lamb of God...” Origen took up the traditional doctrine about the saving value of the Christ’s suffering on the cross: that through suffering Christ defeated Satan and delivered us from sin. However, he also introduced a reflection on the death of Jesus as a sacrifice. The one who leads to the sacrifice is Word, the sacrifice – the Lamb of God – man Jesus Christ and the one who accepts sacrifice – the Father. Its saving effect causes for the people cleansing of sin. Origen found this doctrine difficult to comprehend and the one that can easily lead to accusing God of cruelty. Probably it was caused by the fact that apologists opposed the Christians to the pagans exactly as those who do not offer sacrifices, because the almighty God does not need them. They also avoided presenting Christ’s death on the cross as sacrifice. Origen however, as we may think, acknowledged the doctrine about the Christ’s death as a sacrifice as the most profound description of the meaning of the Christ’s cross. This conviction is rooted in the teaching of Origen about the spiritual meaning of the sacrifices, which he developed in the homilies about the sacrifices in the Old Testament.
