DAS MARTYRIUM DES SELIGEN JOHANNES SARKANDER
Der Artikel ist ein Auszug aus der Magisterarbeit über den seligen Johannes Sarkander. Im ersten Teil gibt der Verfasser einen Überblick über die Situation und die neuen Kräfte, welche nach dem Trienter Konzil zur Restauration des Katholizismus in Böhmen und Mähren geführt haben. Eine sehr wichtige Arbeit in dieser Richtung leisteten die Jesuiten, die in vielen Orten Böhmens und Mährens Volksmissionen abgehalten haben. In diese Zeit kommt das Leben und das Martyrium eines Priesters, der in Skoczów, heute in der Diözese Katowice, geboren (1576), in die Diözese Olmütz aufgenommen und im Jahre 1609 zum Priester geweiht wurde. Als Pfarrer in Holesov bei Kojetin in Mähren führte er eine segensreiche Tätigkeit, die bei den Protestanten und den sog. Böhmischen Brüdern nicht gut gesehen war. Man hat ihn wegen Wallfahrten nach Częstochowa und nach Kraków wegen Hochverrat angeklagt, was ein Unsinn war. Dazu kam ein anderer Umstand. Die Ankläger wollten wissen, was ihm der katholischer Fürst Lobkovic in der Beichte gesagt hat. So ist Sarkander auch ein Märtyrer des Beichtgeheimnisses. Nach schweren Torturen starb er im Kerker am 17.3.1620 im Ruf der Heiligkeit. Auf Bemühen der Olmützer Diözese wurde er vom Papst Pius IX 1859 seliggesprochen.

The Cult of St. Stephen in the Ministry of Bishop Augustine of Hippo
Among many ancient Christian martyrs, deacon Stephen, the first martyr for the faith, was held in special reverence. His cult spread, in particular, due to the fact that his body was found. Some of his relics were also brought to Hippo in Africa, at the time when St. Augustine was a bishop there. The bishop was cautious about emerging news. Nevertheless, he ordered to build a chapel dedicated to the Martyr and allowed to venerate Stephen’s relics. In the same time, he was studying the emerging cases of miracles that were attributed to the Martyr. St. Augustine in his teaching, however, tried to emphasize the essence of worship and to direct the attention of the faithful to Christ, who was acting through the intercession of Stephen. The figure of the holy Deacon was featured as a follower of the Savior. The attitude of St. Stephen served as an example for the faithful. The cult of the relics and delight in miracles that were performed referred to the actions of God itself who manifests divine might towards the faithful.

Anicjusz Boecjusz, czekając w więzieniu na wykonanie wyroku śmierci, napisał ostatnie dzieło swego życia, Consolatio Philosophiae. Proces, skazanie i śmierć Boecjusza, począwszy od VIII w., były interpretowane jako męczeństwo poniesione w obronie wiary katolickiej. Opinia ta utrzymywała się aż do czasów Dantego. Paradoksalnie krytyka historyczna powątpiewała w chrześcijaństwo Boecjusza, powołując się na to, że w Consolatio Philosophiae nie mówi on nic na temat chrześcijaństwa. Ciągle aktualne jest zagadnienie, czy Consolatio Philosophiae jest dziełem chrześcijańsko-teologicznym, czy pogańsko-filozoficznym. Omawiane inspiracje chrześcijańskie, które wielu uczonych kwestionuje (exempli gratia prof.. M. Jaczynowska), a także przytoczone aluzje biblijne wydają się przesądzać wydźwięk ideowy utworu.

Greek and Coptic Martyrdom of Saint Menas. An Introduction and Translation with Commentary
In the late antiquity, a cult of St. Menas was widespread over the whole Roman world, and his sanctuary in Abu Mena was a centre of a bustling pilgrimage movement. In the course of time, a significant hagiographic dossier has been created around the figure of the Saint. The paper presents two basic texts which are martyr passions. The Greek text originated plausibly in the 5th century. It contains the version of the Menas’ martyrdom that was the most prominent in the Greek and Latin world. The Coptic text, although preserved only fragmentarily, shows how the vernacular Egyptian flavour and the tradition of the Abu Mena contributed to the Saint Menas’ legend.
